Reason to be optimistic about city economy in 2012: Conference Board

Thunder Bay's economic forecast for 2012 paints a rosy picture for the city. Projections by Conference Board of Canada senior economist Robin Wiebe puts the city at an 11-year high for economic performance.

Thunder Bay's economic forecast for 2012 paints a rosy picture for the city.

Projections by Conference Board of Canada senior economist Robin Wiebe puts the city at an 11-year high for economic performance. Wiebe says the city is expected to grow 1.7 per cent this year.

He points to a number of factors, including increased interest in the mining and resource sector, that help lead to this forecast.

“There will be educational initiatives through the new law school, the ongoing development of the waterfront, and the courthouse is under construction down in the south core,” he said.

“So there are a number of reasons for relative optimism.”

Even with such a positive forecast, Wiebe said Thunder Bay remains at the low end of the provincial outlook.
