RECALL: Above-ground pools recalled for possible drowning hazard

There have been nine reported drownings in the US, but so far none in Canada.

THUNDER BAY — A popular above-ground pool model has been recalled for safety concerns regarding possible drowning hazards.

Three brands are affected by the federal recall: Bestway, Intex and Polygroup Above-Ground Pools, which all sell above-ground pools, as there's a support strap that runs on the outside of the pool.

This compression strap allows children to climb the outside of the pool, posing a drowning hazard if they were to gain access to the water.

According to Health Canada's recall notice, "As of July 17, 2025, the companies have not received any reports of incidents or injuries in Canada. In the United States, the companies have received three reports of incidents and nine reports of drownings."

Approximately 266,000 units were sold in Canada, with affected products being sold by Bestway Models between 2008 and 2024, Intex Models between 2003 and 2012, and Polygroup Models between 2006 and 2025.

Health Canada is advising those with affected pools to ensure there is secure access to the pool to deter children from accessing it unsupervised or, alternatively, drain the pool until the repair can be installed.

If a consumer's pool is part of the recall, they can contact Bestway, Intex or Polygroup to request a repair kit.

Bestway toll-free at 844-593-4003, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, online, or by email at [email protected].

Intex toll-free at 800-549-8829, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday, online, or by email at [email protected].

Polygroup toll-free at 888-621-4137, from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. MT, Monday through Friday, online, or by email at [email protected].
