Recent storm reveals lack of preparedness: Hydro official

A recent windstorm that left thousands in Thunder Bay in the dark proved that many people aren't prepared for an emergency, a Thunder Bay Hydro official said Friday.
A recent windstorm that left thousands in Thunder Bay in the dark proved that many people aren't prepared for an emergency, a Thunder Bay Hydro official said Friday.

The local utility is teaming up with the Canadian Red Cross and a number of other organizations to promote emergency awareness at an event on Saturday. The Be Ready Day event will take place at Intercity Mall – between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. – where people will find out what they should be doing before an emergency happens.

Ken Widdifield is the disaster services co-ordinator for the Canadian Red Cross. He said the event is particularly important as we transition to the winter season.

Widdifield says it is not unusual for Thunder Bay to have major storm events, power outages or floods. Thunder Bay Hydro's Eileen Dias said even the recent power outage showed that many people are lost in the dark when an event happens.
