Police say a motorist running a red light is the likely cause of a two-vehicle crash Wednesday that closed the southern side of the John and Court street intersection.

Const. Gordon Snyder said the incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m.

“It was a collision involving a passenger van and a car. At this time there does not appear to be any serious injuries as a result of the collision and it appears one of the vehicles had gone through a red light.”

One of the vehicles, a blue Pontiac Montana, proceeded through the intersection and crashed through a traffic standard, the force of the collision ripping the sign from its moorings and through the security fence of an adjacent business.

It was a cause of concern for emergency crews on scene.

“The light still has power, so there are still live wires, so city crews are currently working to make sure that it’s safe,” said Snyder, saying he hoped to see the intersection reopened fully before the supper hour ends.

At least one person was taken to hospital for precautionary measures.
