People looking to get home safely with Operation Red Nose have one last chance this year.

The campaign, in support of St. John’s Ambulance, will wrap up its third year Friday night.
Ken Boshcoff, in his final year as chair, said the campaign is really a part of the holiday season in Thunder Bay now. While final numbers won’t be available until early next month, Boshcoff said numbers are way up this year.

“It will be at least double from last year and certainly triple or more from year one in all categories,” he said. “Once they try it then they realize how very simple it is and really the fact that they’ve got their car in the morning home with them is convincing people all the time.”

While a $20 donation is appreciated, Boshcoff said the main thing is that people get home safe.

“We just hope that people know that we’ve saved them 80 bucks or 100 bucks,” he said. “I don’t want anybody under any circumstances to ever have to feel that they have to contribute. We just want to get you home and off the road.”

Boshcoff said even though awareness has curbed some of the problem of people trying to get a ride without insurance, it remains a problem.

“And that’s only for the tiny section of people calling Operation Red Nose so it is troublesome.”

Operation Red Nose will run Friday from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. To arrange a ride, call 683-6673.
