Region’s food bank usage up: RFDA

A national study shows there's been an increase in food bank usage across Canada, and Thunder Bay appears to be no exception.

A national study shows there's been an increase in food bank usage across Canada, and Thunder Bay appears to be no exception.

Regional Food Bank director Volker Kromm said although the provincial average is down slightly, the Thunder Bay region saw an increase between five and eight per cent in terms of food bank usage.

Kromm added that on average, 8,700 people use the regional food banks per month, with an increase of singles and seniors using the programs.

Kromm also said the most surprising factor is not the repeat customers, but the working poor that appears to be using the food banks in order to put meals on the table.

The RFDA will go through $ 1.3 million worth of food this year, up from $900,000 in 2010.
