Regular wristwatches still in demand

Classic wristwatches are still a staple piece for many despite the increased fanfare for smartwatches.

THUNDER BAY — The popularity of smartwatches hasn't hampered traditional timepiece sales and maintenance, according to Fast Time Watch and Jewellery Repair manager Amanda Skrabek.

"We don't do any repairing of smartwatches but we are quite busy with regular ordinary watches," she said.

"We have a very small selection of smartwatches but we're currently kind of going away from those and focusing on regular quartz watches and more traditional timepieces."

Skrabek, who is based in Thunder Bay, said there is still a great demand for a regular timepiece.

"Not only are they fashionable, they are timeless for a lot of people," she said.

"With smartwatches, they have a battery life and you have to charge them constantly. They're not that reliable. With a quartz-type watch, you just pop a battery in, and you're good to go for a year or more, and you don't have to worry about them (frequently) dying on you."

Skrabek has been repairing watches for over 12 years and says she can have a customer in and out within five minutes to change the battery.
