THUNDER BAY -- A group wants to help the city build a pavilion at Waverley Park.
The Coalition for Waverly Park said it would raise around $20,000 of the projected $150,000 to $200,000 for a Victorian-style pavilion to replace the park's band shell, which was torn down several years ago.
President Keith Nymark said they've already heard from several groups that would use the pavilion including the nearby Lakehead University law faculty and Waterfront BIA. It could also be used as a backdrop for wedding photographs.
"It remains just that, a slab of concrete in the city’s oldest park,” Nymark said of the current space that used to hold the band shell.
Council referred the idea to administration but Coun. Aldo Ruberto wondered why the cost for the pavilion was so high.
"Is it gold bricks? Is it silver poles?" he joked.
Nymark said that's what city staff estimated the cost would be.
Hearing that there is no plan in next year's budget, Coun. Linda Rydholm said she didn't want to keep piling task onto administration.
"I get concerned when I see more and more work given to staff knowing we’re not going to give them the money to do it,” she said.
