THUNDER BAY – A Thunder Bay city councillor wants to see the city review its role in supporting those displaced by the effects of climate change.

A motion from Coun. Peng You that will be debated by council on Monday seeks a report from city staff on the issue, arguing the city should consider how it will contribute to solving what is projected to become an increasing problem in the decades ahead.

His motion would direct administration to “provide council with an update on relevant work that has been done on the subject of climate refugees [and] how the city is prepared to host and welcome those relocating as a result of climate change and associated climate emergencies.”

The motion would direct staff to consult with the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) and the Thunder Bay Multicultural Association.

In a memo, You points out the city has recognized climate change as an emergency and looked to respond with plans to cut its emissions and adapt its infrastructure.

“Many studies and reports are projecting that upwards of millions of people will be displaced in the coming years as a result of climate change,” the at-large councillor wrote. “Increased numbers of extreme weather events, a threat to food security and rising sea levels are just a part of what we are seeing globally.”

The motion will be debated at a meeting of city council on Monday evening.
