WABASEEMOONG INDEPENDENT NATIONS - A reported case of COVID-19 among a Wabaseemoong Independent Nations member is sparking concerns on social media.

Chief Waylon Scott reassured members of the community, located about 100 kilometres northwest of Kenora, on social media Saturday. Scott said he was optimistic the case is being contained after speaking with health professionals.

"They’re assuring the community, with certainty, that they’ve got this contained and [it] will not spread," he wrote on Facebook. "The same protocols and procedures they used for the other First Nations will be [used] for our community and has proven to work... even after they’ve been hit harder than us."

The case has not yet been confirmed by the Northwestern Health Unit, and Tbnewswatch was not immediately able to reach the health unit or Wabaseemoong Independent Nations for comment. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
