Another vehicle crash along Broadway Avenue has at least one resident concerned for the safety of his family.

Bill Hamilton, a branch supervisor at Ecco Heating Products, has lived in the neighbourhood of Broadway Avenue for the past 12 years and said speeding vehicles are a constant problem. Last May a car crashed through his fence, hit his house, and caused $15,000 worth of damages.

Nearly a year later, a similar incident happened on Sunday where a truck crashed into a telephone pole and took out his neighbour’s fence.

Hamilton, who has two children, said he’s concerned for their safety and something has to be done.

“It’s just lucky no one has been killed,” Hamilton said.

“We’re getting a lot of people speeding up and down that road in an excess of 100 km/h. It’s a 50 km/h zone. It has been four times in seven years within 300 feet of each other that there have been accidents on this road. It’s all due to speed and alcohol.”

Hamilton said the police have always been involved whenever there is a crash and they try to enforce drivers to slow down but after a month or two, they seem to stop their efforts.

He said he would like enforcement that is more frequent and more signs posted.

He added that he has contacted his councillor and hoped that she will help in dealing with this situation.

Thunder Bay Police Service Const. Julie Tilbury said the incident happened around 3 a.m. and the truck was heading eastward along Broadway. The truck hit a mailbox, swerved across the road hitting a speed sign and a hydro poll before crashing through a fence.

Tilbury said the investigation is ongoing and didn’t know how often collisions happened in the area.

“(Speeding) is one of those issues where they can probably step up the number of ride enforcement type issues that we have going on in that area but it is one of those things where is a police vehicle isn’t there then people are just going to speed,” Tilbury said.

“It’s not really a win-win situation. I guess the area is going to have to be looked at to see what else they can do.”
