Residents escape possible arson unharmed

Police remain on scene outside Carl Avenue home.

THUNDER BAY - Two Jumbo Gardens-area residents escaped an early morning fire unharmed on Tuesday.

Firefighters were alerted to a structural fire in the 200 block of Carl Avenue just before 8 a.m..

In a release, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said two occupants were alerted to a fire in the rear of the home, and escaped without sustaining injuries. A neighbour reported hearing screaming around that time.

Responding units observed a large amount of smoke and flames and called a second alarm. Five pumpers, a platoon chief, and aerial ladder unit were called to the scene and firefighters quickly knocked down the blaze.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Thunder Bay police had two cruisers on scene throughout the morning and a spokesperson confirmed they are investigating the fire as a possible arson.
