THUNDER BAY - With the city being struck with several heavy snowfalls in the past few weeks, drivers have had to exercise a little extra caution navigating those high snowbanks. But city officials say road crews are working to bring them down in the coming weeks.

Brad Adams, roads manager with the city of Thunder Bay, said crews are working to clear sidewalks and snowbanks across the city.

“What we are doing right now, in some of our older areas of the city where there is not much off-street parking, we are picking up snow in those areas,” he said. “In the East End we are picking up snow right now.”

Crews will also be working to remove snowbanks to increase visibility at intersections in the city.

“We are planning to mobilize snow removal for the evening and midnight shift starting Monday,” Adams said. “We are looking at some of the core areas, doing some removal in those core areas. That should take a week or two weeks to get that done.”

Adams added this is a rather typical winter when it comes to the amount of snow and snow removal. The city is also bringing in extra equipment to assist.

“We’ve done this last winter as well,” Adams said. “Some of the extra equipment we have to bring in is extra dump trucks. We don’t have enough dump trucks to take the snow away so we do hire some dump trucks to bring into our work compliment to assist us with the snow removal.”
