THUNDER BAY - Rogers customers across the country were left without service Friday when the national carrier went down unexpectedly, and locally, everyone in the city was affected as most businesses were unable to accept Interac debit payments.

In a statement posted to social media on Saturday, the communications giant said that it has now restored services for the vast majority of its customers and that technical teams are continuing the work to bring the remaining customers back online.

"As our service comes back online and our traffic volumes return to normal, some customers may experience a delay in regaining full service," the statement read.

Rogers says that it will be proactively crediting all customers for the downtime but warns customers to not believe any spam texts they receive as the crediting will happen automatically.

"We are aware of scam text messages being sent claiming to offer credits in the wake of yesterday’s service interruptions," Rogers said in a Twitter post. "We will apply the credit proactively to your account & no action is required. If you receive a suspicious SMS, please forward it to 7726 (SPAM)."

Local carrier Tbaytel also announced a mobility credit to their customers in the city on Twitter on Saturday.

"The nationwide Rogers outage affecting Tbaytel Mobility has been resolved. We apologize and recognize that the outage was disruptive to your day," Tbaytel said in the post. "

"A proactive credit for the time of the outage will be automatically issued to our Tbaytel Mobility postpaid customers next month."
