THUNDER BAY -- The urban garden at the corner of Algoma and Cornwall Avenue will soon be no more as Roots to Harvest is gearing up for a change of locations.

Representatives from the group said the owner of this site has graciously donated his land for nine years now, but always made it clear that one day he would need it back.

The day has come, the organization will begin packing up next week.

This location is the site of a student summer program, where teenagers work at the garden and learn about sustainability.

This program is one of the main reasons why Roots to Harvest wants to find a new location within the city.

Roots to Harvest community grower Stuart Oke said the organization believes in their mandate of using food as a mechanism to interact with youth and with other people.

“It’s really an important mission for us to continue on in another location,” Oke said.

“It’s not specific to this site, it’s flexible enough that we can move anywhere, because growing food is something we strongly believe in and connecting with kids and the power it can have.”

Roots to Harvest has two other sites in the city.
