NIPISSING FIRST NATION, Ont. — For the first time, a woman has been chosen to serve as Ontario Regional Chief.

In the traditional stand-up election, RoseAnne Archibald was elected on Wednesday at the annual All Ontario Chiefs Conference hosted by Nipissing First Nation.

The Chief of Taykwa Tagamou Nation received 67 votes, defeating incumbent Isadore Day of Serpent River First Nation, who got 36 votes.

As Ontario Regional Chief, Archibald will be a member of the Assembly of First Nations national executive and the chair of the political confederacy of the Chiefs of Ontario. According to a statement from the Chiefs of Ontario office, in that capacity she is mandated to deal with the federal and Ontario governments on certain issues.

Archibald previously served as grand chief of the Mushkegowuk Council and deputy grand chief of Nishnawbe Aski Nation.

The Chiefs of Ontario represent 133 First Nation communities.
