Queen Elizabeth II was reminded of the sacred treaty relationship she has with Canadian First Nations people when she met with area chiefs Tuesday.
Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand chief Stan Beardy said it was an exciting day when he and several other NAN chiefs met with the Queen at Queen’s Park in Toronto. Beardy said he reminded the queen that the treaties are legally binding and that Canada has an obligation to honour the relationship.
"I am very happy for my people. For us the treaty arrangement is very sacred," said Beardy.
The meeting lasted several minutes and while the Queen didn’t respond to Beardy’s reminder, she did ask all of the chiefs specific questions about where they were from and what treaties they represented.
Beardy said the fact that the Queen met with area chiefs is a statement in itself.
"I reminded her that I was there because of the treaty relationship we have with the British Crown," Beardy added.
