THUNDER BAY – Athletes young and old are getting set to Run the North for a third consecutive year.

Last year their efforts helped raise $27,000 in support of both the United Way of Thunder Bay’s youth programs and the Indigenous Youth Achievement and Recognition Awards, and this year the goal is to try to top $30,000.

One youngster who has raised $4,700 combined over the past two years, said she’s aiming for the top fundraising prize again in 2022.

Aubrey Rempel said she loves taking part in the run each year, noting this year’s event will not only include a virtual component, but will also have a live, in-person walk around Boulevard Lake on June 18, limited to the first 150 people who sign up.

The ink on Aubrey’s name on the sign-up sheets has long since dried.

“I’m really happy that I’m doing Run the North again because it’s fun, it gives me good exercise and the money I raise goes to kids in the community, said the 10-year-old, a Grade 5 student at St. Martin School.

“I usually ask friends and family and if see if they’d like to (sponsor) me. Last year I also sold lemonade and cupcakes.”

Jodie Wilson, the director of philanthropy and community and engagement at the United Way of Thunder Bay, said it’s great to be back to hosting regular in-person events, Run the North in particular.

“We’re really excited to have the (in-person) component to this year’s race. The virtual race is great, a third year of great participation. The event is growing and getting larger and larger. It’s your race at your place, which is great,” Wilson said.

“You can run it virtually or please join us on Saturday, June 18. The first 150 can walk or run around this beautiful Boulevard Lake and we’ll be here for you. It’ll be a great thing we can do together.”

Wilson said being able to do things in person is underrated.

“We’ve all really missed our donors and getting together. I think it brings joy and a smile to everybody.”

There are two different race courses, a one-kilometre and a five-kilometre distance.

To register for Run the North, which is also presented by Wasaya Airways, visit www.uwaytbay.ca. Anyone who registers by May 13 will be entered into the early-bird drat for a chance to win an iPad. The virtual race will be held between June 9 and June 19.
