Heavy snow descended on Thunder Bay overnight on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017.

THUNDER BAY -- Wintry weather means rural schools in the Thunder Bay area are closed for the day and students across the city will have to find their own way to class.

Lakehead Public Schools on Tuesday announced it has closed Valley Central, Crestview, Whitefish Valley, Gorham and Ware, McKenzie and Kakabeka Falls.

However, all urban elementary and secondary schools will remain open, with the responsibility of getting to class falling on students and their parents. Nor'wester View Public School and Five Mile Public School remain open.

However, because of a power outage, Ogden Park Community School and McKellar Park Public School have been closed for the day. The same outage has led the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board to close St. Jude School for the day.

Also, the Thunder Bay Public Library will be closed today due to the weather and related issues.

The Intercity Shopping Centre will not be opening as power will not be restored to the building until around 6 p.m.
