Salvation Army hands out Christmas hampers and calls for volunteers for kettle program

The Salvation Army Journey to Life Centre is looking for more volunteers to help reach $235,000 goal.

THUNDER BAY – The Salvation Army Journey to Life Centre in partnership with the Thunder Bay RFDA and other local food banks gave out Christmas hampers to residents of Thunder Bay who are in need on Dec. 16.

“It’s a very special thing for individuals, it allows people to have the proper food and nutrition throughout this holiday season,” said Salvation Army Journey to Life Centre president Gary Ferguson, president.

Organizers planned to give out between 150 and 200 hampers that include everything you need for a Christmas meal like a chicken, vegetables, fruit and some canned items.

The Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle Campaign is also coming to a close with just a week left and roughly $110,000 short of its goal of $235,000.

“So what we’re looking for is volunteers to help man the kettles. We have a variety of different spots throughout the city where people can actually do that and if they’re interested, they can give us a call at 345-6492.”

The Salvation Army is hoping to get more volunteers for all of its locations in the city including all Walmart locations, LCBO locations and at Superstore, but it requires volunteers for people to staff the kettles at the LCBO locations both during the day and in the evenings.

Demands continue for the Salvation Army’s services such as the soup van that feeds an average of 116 people per night, a school breakfast program, or the food bank that provides hampers to families and individuals with limited financial resources.

“The ongoing pandemic continues to create challenges for many people in our community.  The support we receive from means we will be able to make Christmas a happier time for them and we will be able to assist them through the year.  Thank you to everyone for your caring gifts,” said Ferguson.
