Salvation Army hopeful Walmart initiative will offer big help

Salvation Army officials hope the Walmart shoppers will dig a little bit deeper in their pockets on Thursday.

That's because the retail chain is offering to provide a major boost to the organizations Christmas Kettle campaign.

Thursday is Walmart Fill the Kettle Day at company stores across Canada. Under the program, the company has pledged to match all donations collected during the day, up to $100,000.

Last year in Thunder Bay, that initiative resulted in an extra $1,400 going to the charity.

Maj. Mervyn Halvorsen said the additional support is important to the success of the campaign.

Right now, the annual Kettle drive is about $17,000, which is short of its $150,000 goal.
