THUNDER BAY -- The separate school board will meet with the union representing its elementary school teachers Monday.

Officials with the Thunder Bay District Catholic School Board will resume contract negotiations with The Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association after a nearly two month hiatus.

The last collective bargaining agreement ended nearly two years ago. Spokespersons for both parties say the seniority clause is a key issue holding up a deal.

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association wants seniority to be a major criterion for filling any posted positions.

Negotiators for the two sides have set aside two days for talks.

In a statement, Director of Education Pino Tassone said last week that "we continue to remain optimistic throughout these negotiations."  He also thanked the school board trustees and school principals "for their endless support during this time."

OECTA Thunder Bay unit president Aldo Grillo said "we've always been eager to get back to the table so everyone can get on with their jobs."
