THUNDER BAY – Staff employed by Lakehead Public Schools and the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board have been advised, under the penalty of not being paid for up to 14 days, not to travel outside Northwestern Ontario for non-essential reasons.

In a memo sent to board employees, staff are being advised to follow the Thunder Bay District Health Unit’s travel advisory and that anyone with upcoming plans to travel beyond White River to the east or the Manitoba border to the west, should reschedule or find alternatives to traveling in person.

Essential travel is defined as for medical or human-rights-related reasons, such as a disability or family status accommodations.

Staff who travel may not return to board properties until they’ve completed a 14-day quarantine and are asymptomatic.

“Staff returning from non-essential travel outside of Northwestern Ontario will not be compensated for the requisite time spent away from work,” the memo to the public board employees reads.

A Lakehead University spokesman said the school has advised staff to follow the health unit's travel guidelines.
