THUNDER BAY — WIth a cold weather warning in effect, the City of Thunder Bay has cancelled its school crossing guard service this morning.
The city issued a statement saying its policy is to cancel the service when temperatures and wind combine to create a wind chill factor below -40 C, in order to protect the health and safety of its staff.
Parents are urged to find alternate methods of safe travel to or from school for their children.
The service is expected to resume for the afternoon shift.
Environment Canada has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for Thunder Bay and much of Northwestern Ontario.
A multi-day episode of very cold wind chills is expected.
Extreme wind chill values of minus 40 to minus 45 are expected this Monday morning and night.
There will be some improvement during the afternoon as temperatures warm slightly, before temperatures fall again in the evening.
The extreme cold may continue for the remainder of this week with wind chill values approaching minus 40 each night.
