Police have suspended the underwater search for a local man suspected of drowning in the MacKenzie River.

The OPP’s underwater search and recovery unit began its search for Larry Larivee, 26, of Thunder Bay on Friday. Larivee disappeared into the river while swimming on Wednesday, June 19.

Police say the area of the river where Larivee went missing has some extremely fast flowing water near a waterfall. OPP divers searched the areas that were deemed safe, while officers continued their ground search.

While there are still areas for police to search, officials say divers will have to wait for water levels and flow to subside before they can continue.

Police are now asking area residents to stay away from the MacKenzie Falls area as the conditions are still dangerous for swimmers.
