Second-degree murder charge for Dawson Street accused

THUNDER BAY - A 21-year-old woman has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Lydia Rose Jacob, 47, at a Dawson Street apartment Friday.

Lyrina Jacob, a Thunder Bay resident originally from Big Beaverhouse First Nation, made a brief court appearance via telephone on Saturday morning to face the charge. 

Paramedics attempted to revive the victim after first responders were called to the apartment at the intersection Dawson and Algoma streets at about 2 p.m. on Friday, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A postmortem of the victim is scheduled to take place Saturday in Thunder Bay.

Lyrina Jacob has been remanded into custody and will make a future appearance on June 26 by telephone from the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre.

The incident marks the seventh homicide of 2020 in Thunder Bay, matching the city's total for all of 2019.
