Second leaf and yard waste collection begins June 10

The city will collect leaf and yard waste a total of four times this year, twice in the spring and twice more in the fall.

THUNDER BAY – The city’s final spring leaf and yard waste collection dates are fast approaching.

Municipal officials say the curbside collection will take place between June 10 and June 20, on residents’ regular recycling day.

It’s the second of two collections taking place this spring, with two more slated for later in the year.

“Having two collections in the spring and two again in the fall allows the city to increase the amount of leaf and yard waste collected and diverted from the landfill,” said Jason Sherband, manager of solid waste and recycling services, in a release issued on Thursday.

“Last fall, with the two collections, we saw a significant increase in the tonnage collected. That told the city that the second collection is a valuable service for residents. We’re looking forward to seeing residents take advantage of four annual leaf and yard waste collections in the future.”

Participants in the program are reminded that only kraft paper bags are accepted for leaf and yard waste and each filled bag must weigh less than 18 kilograms.

Bundled branches are also accepted, with bundles measuring less than one metre in length and 61 centimetres in circumference, tied with string.

There is no limit to the number of leaf and yard waste bags a resident may set on the curb.

Collection could start as early as 7 a.m., depending on one’s neighbourhood.

The release goes on to say the city uses the leaf and yard waste to make compost at the solid waste and recycling facility, which is given away free to residents each spring.
