UPDATE: Three-vehicle collision near Shabaqua causes serious injuries

Trans-Canada Highway remains partially closed

THUNDER BAY – One person was sent to hospital with serious injuries after what OPP now say was a three-vehicle collision west of Thunder Bay late Tuesday morning..

Police say a westbound passenger vehicle went out of control on Highway 17, crossed the centre line, and struck an eastbound pickup truck as well as an eastbound transport truck.

The accident occurred about 10 kilometres west of Shabaqua, forcing the closure of the highway for about 90 minutes before it was opened to one lane of alternating traffic.

Prior to paramedics arriving on the scene, the male driver of the passenger vehicle was removed from the vehicle and given first aid by passers-by.

Two occupants of the transport truck and the driver and lone occupant of the pickup escaped injury.

OPP say Upsala volunteer firefighters also responded to the collision.
