Thunder Bay's Simpson Street, seen on Sept. 9, 2016, will be shut down for major road and infrastructure improvements from Dease Street to Victoria Avenue until the fall.

THUNDER BAY — A section of Simpson Street, from Victoria Avenue to Dease Street, will be closed to all traffic starting Monday.

The closure will enable the city to make major road and infrastructure improvements, involving a full road rehabilitation, according to a press release issued by the City of Thunder Bay on Friday.

These rehabilitation efforts will include the complete removal and replacement of asphalt, as well as the upgrading of the sewer and water infrastructure along the corridor.

New sidewalks will also be installed and traffic signals at intersections will be replaced to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety.

While no formal detour routes will be in place during the closure, the city will post signage to guide motorists and pedestrians around the construction zone.

The city reminds road users to drive with caution, follow all posted signs and plan alternate routes where possible.

With weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by the fall.

Residents seeking more information on the closure or to report an issue can contact the infrastructure and operations dispatch at 807-625-2195.
