Seniors kick off Strathcona Invitational

Randy Robinson, Rollie Turrie and John Valley in fine form during qualifying play.

THUNDER BAY -- Day 1 at the Strathcona Invitational is in the books.

Randy Robinson got the start he was looking for on Friday in the senior division qualifying round, topping all golfers with a four-over 76 and will head into medal play on Saturday as the top seed.

“The greens were in excellent shape, true but fast and overall the
course was in good shape considering the dry spell we have had," Robinson said.

Past champion Rollie Turrie was one shot better in the super senior division, firing a three-over 75 to earn the top seed heading into the start of match play on Saturday. He'll take on John DeGrazia in his first-round match.

In the master's division, four-time champion John Valley, who won titles in 1973, 1975, 1978 and 2000, topped the leaderboard with a five-over 77, tied with Glen Fossum.

Valley will pair up with Ron Robinson, the most recent masters champion, when match play begins on Saturday.

Saturday will also mark the start of regular division play, with the qualifying round beginning in the morning. The Invitational is sponsored by Teleco and Tbaytel.
