THUNDER BAY – A police operation designed to weed out impaired drivers landed a 22-year-old Thunder Bay woman with an impaired driving charge.
Police also charged a second driver with impaired early on Canada Day morning.
Ontario Provincial Police said they were conducting a RIDE program along the off-ramp at Balsam Street on June 22 at about 12:45 a.m. when it was determined one driver they had pulled over had been consuming alcoholic beverages.
She was arrested and taken to the detachment for further testing.
The accused was subsequently charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration 80 plus, novice driver, blood alcohol concentration above zero and driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor.
She was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Aug. 6.
In the second incident, which took place at about 1:23 a.m. on July 1, officers on general patrol initiated a traffic stop on Highway 11/17 within the city of Thunder Bay.
Officers determined the male driver, 55, had been consuming alcoholic beverages and he was placed under arrest and taken for further testing.
As a result, the accused was charged with operation while impaired, blood alcohol concentration 80 plus, operation while impaired, alcohol and drugs, driving without proper headlights and failing to signal a lane change.
The accused was released from custody and will be in court in Thunder Bay on Aug. 20.
