Sandra Morriseau was sitting in her home doing a crossword puzzle when she heard a truck drive by.
Living in Totem Trailer Court next to Chippewa Road, it's not an uncommon sound. But she wasn’t prepared for what happened next.
“It was a little bit too close coming at my house and ‘bang’ the (hydro) pole went down and then ‘bang’ by the time I got to my bedroom window it was in her living room,” Morriseau said of the tractor trailer that slammed into her neighbour’s home.
The crash knocked the gas meter off of the mobile home and scattered hydro lines across the road, shutting down traffic in both directions. Gas and hydro crews were on the scene quickly to turn the utilities off. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue Platoon Chief Larry Warner said the truck lost control.
“Undetermined at this time as to why,” he said as police started the investigation Monday afternoon.
An elderly woman in the home was taken to hospital with what’s believed to be non-life threatening injuries. The driver was also taken to hospital but Warner didn’t know the status of the driver.
Don Sawchyn has lived two houses away from the crash for 26 years. It’s worrying him now how close some of the homes, including his own, are to the road.
“Another 50 feet he would’ve had me,” Sawchyn said of the truck.
Gloria Esquega, who lives across the street, said there are a lot of children in the area. She and her son were watching TV when they heard a loud bang.
“We heard this huge bang just metal crashing,” she said. “It’s scary because our children come for the buses and things like that.”
“Anything could’ve happened with the truck.”
The investigation continues.
