Sudden death on South Marks Street

Witness says person was on the ground in a pool of blood when police arrived.

THUNDER BAY -- City police are investigating a sudden death in the 300 block of South Marks Street.

In a release issued on Monday night, police say they arrived on scene at the intersection of Arthur and South Marks streets just before 5 p.m. on Monday, where they found a seriously injured male on the ground.

Two ambulances were escorted by police to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, where the victim was later pronounced dead.

The Thunder Bay Police Service's criminal investigation branch is on scene and police have closed South Marks Street between Arthur and Ridgeway streets.

"Residents are not in danger and will be assisted in coming and going from their homes. It is not known how long this closure will take," police said in the release.

A green tent covering what appears to be pools of blood has been erected and officers can be seen interviewing nearby residents. A witness who did not want to be named says he saw a person laying on the ground with serious injuries.

Police have not said whether it's a crime scene or if anyone has been taken into custody, offering only that an update will be provided on Tuesday.

"This is the early stage of the investigation," police spokesman Chris Adams said in the release.

This is a breaking news story. Updates will be provided as available.
