DRYDEN, Ont. — The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reports it has confirmed seven new bushfires across Northwestern Ontario by late Sunday afternoon.
Four fires broke out in the ministry's Sioux Lookout sector, two in the Kenora sector, and one in Red Lake.
All were listed as not under control by the end of the day.
The largest fire, Sioux Lookout 37, had burned 10 hectares near Apachi Lake, about 50 kilometres southeast of Pickle Lake.
A five-hectare fire, Sioux Lookout 36, was also burning near Atik Creek, about 40 kilometres north of Pickle Lake.
There are currently 25 active fires in the region, including 12 that are not under control.
The forest fire hazard is low to moderate in southern portions of the region including the Fort Frances and Thunder Bay sectors, but high to extreme in areas of the Kenora, Dryden, Red Lake, sioux Lookout and Nipigon sectors.
