THUNDER BAY - A late afternoon gas leak forced the evacuation of several buildings on Memorial Avenue Friday afternoon.

According to Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, crews responded to reports of a gas leak on the corner of Memorial Avenue and John Street at approximately 5 p.m. on Friday.

Crews discovered that the main natural gas line supplying gas to a large structure was knocked off and releasing a large amount of gas into the air.

Several surrounding buildings were evacuated and Union Gas was called to the scene to assist.

The valve supplying the gas was closed, mitigating the danger. Union Gas crews fixed the broken supply line to ensure the business had gas for its heating unit.

Three pumper trucks responded to the scene, as well as a command vehicle.

There were no reports of injuries as a result of the leak.
