THUNDER BAY — Provincial fire crews were dispatched to deal with some new fires in the Thunder Bay, Nipigon  and Sioux Lookout districts on Monday.

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services reported a 1.9 hectare fire located about 80 kilometres northwest of Geraldton.

It's currently listed as not under control.

A second fire in the same area was quickly brought under control on Monday night after burning 0.1 hectares.

There was also a new fire just 10 kilometres south of Thunder Bay near Loch Lomond Lake.

The 0.2 hectare fire was listed Tuesday morning as being held.

In the far north of the Sioux Lookout district,  a 1.5 hectare fire discovered Monday night is currently being observed.

Forest fire activity so far this season is pacing well below last summer when a larger area was burned in Ontario than in any previous year since record-keeping began.
