THUNDER BAY — Environment Canada issued severe weather warnings or watches Monday for a broad swath of Northwestern Ontario.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in place for the City of Thunder Bay, while watches are in effect for north shore communities and Geraldton, Manitouwadge and Hornepayne.

In most other areas from just outside the Lakehead to the Manitoba boundary, and north to remote communities, watches were elevated to warnings.

Tornado watches were also issued for Upsala, Raith, Gull Bay, Black Sturgeon Lake, Sioux Lookout, Savant Lake, Red Lake, Ear Falls, Pickle Lake, Wunnumin Lake, Sandy Lake, Pikangikum, Fort Hope, Webequie, Lake Nipigon and Wabakami areas.

For areas under a thunderstorm watch and warning, including Thunder Bay, Environment Canada cautioned that there was still a risk of a tornado.

The agency said that a severe weather event in any part of the region could bring damaging winds, heavy rain, and hail up to five centimetres in diameter
