Port activity this year hasn’t been able to catch up with last year’s numbers, statistics show.

Thunder Bay Port Authority figures for October show that 623,000 tonnes of cargo moved through the port last month. That's down from the 790,000 tonnes recorded in October 2009.

For the year, shipping totals have now reached the 5-million tonne mark, which is 570,000 tonnes behind last year’s pace.

The drop off can be attributed to lower grain shipments, which are running about 600,000 tonnes behind last year’s totals.

At this pace there are fears the port may record its lowest ever cumulative totals for a shipping season.
