Shipping through the local port continues to lag this year when compared to last year’s traffic statistics.
According to the Thunder Bay Port Authority, August saw a total of 506,000 tonnes of cargo move through the harbour. That’s down from the 545,000 tonnes recorded in August 2012.
While coal shipments are up in 2013 - nearly doubling the amount that was shipped through this city’s port in 2012 - grain shipments have lagged considerably.
So far this year, the total cargo shipped is just above 3.2 million tonnes.
At this point in 2012 the port had already recorded more than 4 million tonnes.
