The municipality of Shuniah is going paperless for its elections.

The township’s council passed a resolution Monday that would see it move away from the traditional paper ballots in exchange for online and over-the-phone voting.

While this isn’t the first time a municipality has gone with over-the-phone and online voting, Shuniah is taking the unique step of removing the paper ballot option altogether.

Some councillors believed this move would make voting easier for half of the 4,000 Shuniah residents who have primary residences outside of the municipality.  But opponents argue it would have been a better move to ease the community into the new voting system by introducing the options during advance polling.

The switch to solely alternative voting for the 2014 municipal election was made by a vote of four to one.

To help ease the transition information and training sessions will be held throughout the year during open houses hosted by the municipality.
