THUNDER BAY — The Superior International Junior Hockey League playoff match-ups are set.

Play opens Thursday on three fronts, with the Thunder Bay North Stars playing host to the defending champion Red Lake Miners at Fort William Gardens, the opener of their best-of-seven first-round series.

The Stars finished 27-20-4 and took six of seven matches between the two teams this season, the Miners finishing the campaign at 22-25-5.

Game 2 is scheduled for Friday night in Thunder Bay, with the series shifting to Red Lake next Monday and Tuesday for Games 3 and 4.

The Dryden Ice Dogs (37-15-1) took second place in the standings and will take on the last-place Fort Frances Lakers (9-41-1), while the expansion Sioux Lookout Bombers (29-20-3) will host the Wisconsin Lumberjacks (18-28-6) to open their best-of-seven series on Thursday night.

The Kam River Fighting Walleye, who topped all teams with a 40-11-2 record, earned a first-round bye.

The winner of the Bill Salonen Cup will earn the SIJHL’s berth at the Centennial Cup National Junior A Championship in Portage, Man, beginning on May 11.
