Police have laid a single charge under Ontario’s new zero-tolerance drinking and driving law for driver’s 21-years-old and younger.

The new law, which is currently being challenged by a young man in Toronto as a Charter violation, took effect Aug. 1. The law demands that drivers in Ontario 21-years-old or younger possess a blood alcohol level of zero when they are behind the wheel.

The Thunder Bay detachment of the OPP reports that a 17-year-old driver was stopped on Aug. 6 and had a blood alcohol level above zero.

The young driver, who was still about two years away from meeting Ontario’s legal drinking age, received a 24-hour driver’s licence suspension and a $110 fine.

Thunder Bay Police Service officials say they have yet to lay a charge under the new legislation.
