The town of Sioux Lookout has moved one step closer to banning plastic bags.
During the most recent council meeting, a second reading of the controversial bill was passed. Local officials say if the bill goes on to pass a third reading, Sioux Lookout will become the first community in Ontario to ban the sale and distribution of plastic bags. Offenders may face fines ranging from $150 to $500 dollars.
Sioux Lookout deputy mayor James Brohm said he supports bylaw 20-10. As currently worded it will prohibit the sale or free distribution of plastic bags within the municipality of Sioux Lookout. Brohm saidthe by-law originated with the environmental committee and will help the municipality become greener and cleaner.
As written, fines for first offenders convicted of selling or provide plastic bags free of charge will start from $150 dollars for a first offence, $250 for a second offence and $500 for a third offence. Following a first reading earlier this year, the by-law was made available public comment.
Chief Administrative Officer Merlin Dewing said many retail business owners have expressed they're opposition to the by-law .
Adminstration staff say the by-law will again be available for further public input through various sources including the municipal office and the Chamber of Commerce trade show Aug. 5 at the Memorial Arena, as well as on the Sioux Lookout website.
New comments will be accepted until Wednesday Aug. 18. Brohm said he sees the by-law as a chance for Sioux Lookout to make a mark as a leader on green initiatives .
Adminstration officials say it is expected the by-law will be next considered by Council at it's regular meeting scheduled for Sept. 15.
