SIOUX LOOKOUT, Ont. - The Special Investigations Unit will not lay charges against three Ontario Provincial Police officers in Sioux Lookout following an investigation into complaints that a woman received an injury while in custody.

The alleged incident took place in Sioux Lookout on Apr. 6, 2017 after OPP officers responded to reports of several intoxicated individuals in a wooded area.

A 45-year-old woman was found asleep on the ground. Officers placed the woman in handcuffs and she was taken into custody. After her release, she complained her wrist was injured and it was later revealed that she had sustained a fracture.

According to a report compiled by the SIU, there was no concrete evidence to determine when, by what means, or who may have been responsible for the woman’s injury and is therefore “unable to form reasonable grounds to believe that any officer who had contact with the complainant on April 6, 2017, was responsible for that injury.”

The report further stated that based on the investigation, the three officers involved in the incident acted within their limits as prescribed by the law and there are no grounds for charges.

The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency that is called into investigate any incident involving a police officer that may have involved death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
