SIOUX LOOKOUT, ON – The Northwestern Health Unit reported three new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, including two in the Sioux Lookout health hub.

That area includes the Municipality of Sioux Lookout, Pickle Lake and numerous First Nations.

The NWHU's Sioux Lookout health hub had 27 active COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.

This is 10 fewer than on Monday, but it is still the largest number among the health unit's eight health hubs.

The Kenora zone has 25 active cases, and Dryden has two.

In a message to the community last week, Sioux Lookout Mayor Doug Lawrance acknowledged that residents are concerned about the recent increase in positive test results, but said "there is no reason for alarm."

Lawrance said the Northwestern Health Unit is working diligently both on case management and on contact tracing , as well as the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccination program.

Lawrance said numerous community agencies are also working together to provide isolation facilities for people who test positive but don't have access to an appropriate facility.

"And to those who live in northern communities who are concerned about medical travel to Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay, be assured that we are working with our partners to ensure there is space for your community members to isolate if required before returning home."

Lawrance said there is a high level of cooperation among local agencies in the effort to contain the spread of the virus.
