ATITOKAN, Ont. -- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has terminated a probe into a complaint arising from an injury sustained by a man taken into custody in Atikokan.

The complaint was made by a man, 24 years old, who was lodged in an Ontario Provincial Police cell in the community in December 2017.

According to the SIU, he was arrested on December 9, released in the morning, then went to the hospital where he was diagnosed with "a serious injury."

In a statement issued Tuesday, SIU Director Tony Loparco said "There is no evidence that any police officer caused the injury to the man."

As such, Loparco said, he has decided to terminate the investigation.

The Special Investigations Unit released no additional information about the case.
