SIU investigating after Kenora man dies following arrest

A 35-year-old Kenora man died in a Winnipeg hospital five days after his arrest by Kenora OPP responding to a break and enter call.

KENORA, Ont. - The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a man in Kenora died following his arrest by Ontario Provincial Police.

According to an SIU media release, just after 11 p.m. on June 10, officers with the Kenora detachment of the OPP responded to a business on Park Street for reports of a break and enter.

A 35-year-old man was located inside the business and arrested by police. He was transported to hospital in Kenora for treatment and later airlifted to a hospital in Winnipeg where he died on June 15.

A post-mortem examination was conducted in Winnipeg on June 17.

The SIU has assigned three investigators and one forensic investigator to look into the circumstances surrounding the arrest and the death of the man.

One subject officer has been identified as well as five witness officers.  

Anyone who may information regarding this investigation is asked to contact the SIU lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. Anyone with video evidence related to the incident is also asked to upload it through the SIU website.

The SIU is called upon to investigate anytime police are involved in incidents resulting in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
