SIOUX LOOKOUT, Ont. -- The province's special investigations unit has invoked its mandate after a person sustained fatal injuries after responding to a call about a 38-year-old man who had barricaded himself in a Lac Seul First Nation.

According to an SIU release, Lac Seul Police Service arrived on scene at about 5 p.m. on Monday, set up a perimeter and attempted to contact the man.

The OPP tactical unit took control of the scene early on Tuesday morning, as attempts to contact the man continued.

Police entered the home, concerned for the man's safety, and a fatal gunshot was discharged. It's believed to have been self-inflicted.

A post-mortem examination has been scheduled for Thursday in Kenora.

The SIU is asking anyone with information to contact their investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

Because the SIU has invoked its mandate, OPP will be unable to release further information about the incident.
