THUNDER BAY – An investigation by Ontario’s police watchdog into allegations that a woman suffered serious injuries at the hand of the Thunder Bay Police Service has been terminated.

A lawyer contacted the SIU on March 14 to report her client, a 30-year-old woman, had been seriously injured in the course of her arrest by a TBPS officer several months previously.

In a brief statement issued Tuesday, Special Investigations Unit director Joseph Martino said preliminary investigation of the incident indicated it did not fall within the SIU’s mandate to investigate.

“Based on the SIU’s preliminary inquiries, director Martino concluded that the woman did not suffer any serious injuries within the mandate of the SIU,” the agency stated. “As the SIU was without statutory jurisdiction in this matter, the file has been closed.”

The SIU’s mandate is to investigate police actions resulting in serious injury, death, allegations of sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

Martino provided no further details of the case in the statement.
