FORT FRANCES, Ont. - The province’s police watchdog has terminated an investigation into an incident involving a Fort Frances Man who was injured while in the custody of Ontario Provincial Police.

An investigation was launched by the Special Investigation Unit into the incident involving a 28-year-old man in Fort Frances. The investigation determined the man’s injuries were non-life threatening and were self-inflicted.

“The medical evidence received by the SIU indicates the man suffered a non-serious injury,” said acting SIU director, Joseph Martino. “Further, the evidence from persons present at the time is uncontested that the injury was self-inflicted. Accordingly, I have terminated the investigation into this incident.”

The incident took place on July 2, 2018 after the man was arrested by police in Fort Frances due to a domestic situation.

According to the SIU report, the man was seated in the prisoner’s box when making a court appearance and he became agitated and struck his head against the box railing, causing his head to bleed.

Two officers were standing nearby and one officer was able to stop the man from hurting himself any further. The man was taken to hospital to be treated for a possible head injury.

The SIU is called in to investigate when an individual suffers death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault during interactions with a police service.
